A Personal Equinox Reflection

Sixteen years ago the Chocolate Shaman shared an old Mayan myth with me:

Open Quote

“When the world swings so far out of balance, cacao will emerge from the rainforests to open people’s hearts and restore balance.”

Whether taken as prophecy or poetry, its message feels deeply relevant for these times. Modern life often draws our attention outward into noise, productivity, and constant stimulation. But when life speeds up too much, I can feel quite overwhelmed and my balance is usually the first thing to slip away.

As I navigate this fast paced world, I feel so grateful for the gentle grounding remedy of cacao to help bring me back to centre and restore my balance.

Over the last decade and a half of sitting with and sharing Ceremonial Cacao, I’ve come to notice something quite profound about its balancing effect. Like the Chocolate Shaman used to say: Cacao will lead you to the gateway, but it won’t push you through. Cacao won’t automatically bring everything into balance - it won’t do the work for us. But it gently guides us back towards it.

Here are a few of the ways cacao helps me return to balance.

1. Cacao & Physical Balance ~ Supporting the body’s natural rhythm & balance

Something I really appreciate about cacao is the way it energises my body without agitation. Unlike coffee or other stimulants that push the nervous system into peaks and crashes, cacao works more slowly and steadily. The theobromine in cacao supports circulation and blood flow, encouraging energy and focus. Its incredibly high magnesium content deeply nourishes the nervous system, helps muscles relax and eases the stress response.

Over time I’ve noticed how cacao supports a kind of balanced coherence, where energy and relaxation can coexist. It’s subtle but powerful: a sense of steady energy rather than forced energy.

My body softens.
My breath deepens.
My mind becomes clear without becoming restless.

Another profound experience is that whenever I prepare and consume cacao slowly and intentionally, it becomes more than nourishment, it becomes regulation. A daily or weekly ritual with cacao helps my body remember its own natural rhythm: rest balanced with action, stillness balanced with movement.

2. Cacao & Emotional Balance ~ Softening the heart

Cacao is often called a heart-opener, and this is something I’ve both experienced personally and witnessed in clients and customers, again and again. A thousand times over.

It's possibly my favourite quality of cacao; as it relaxes my body and softens my heart, it creates a space of safety for emotions to begin to move more freely. Feelings that may have been held tightly in the body can rise gently to the surface, not in a way that overwhelms, but in a way that allows them to be felt and released. Thanks to the “bliss” chemicals cacao stimulates, along with the magnesium content, it generates this sense of inner softness, space and safety so emotions can flow rather than stagnate.

Of course the more intentionally I do this, the more powerful the effect. (Remember, cacao only leads us to the gateway, it’s up to us to step through!)

Cacao continues to remind me that balance is not the absence of intensity but the capacity to hold it with compassion. So it’s not about suppressing emotion. It’s compassionately allowing emotion to move through me. This makes cacao such a great ally for emotional alchemy. The transformation of armour and rigidity into softness, stagnancy into flow, heaviness into compassionate understanding.

This is where I really tap into the more feminine qualities and gifts of cacao, to bring me back into inner alignment.

3. Cacao & Mental Balance ~ Mind & Heart working together

While working with cacao in Guatemala I learnt that in Mayan tradition, cacao, as sacred plant medicine, was also used in ceremony to restore harmony and balance within the community. Cacao was understood not simply as food, but as a bridge between worlds. This is what inspired me to write on our packaging “Bridging Heaven and Earth”. In my experience, it also bridges the heart and the mind to work together.

The modern imbalance of constant productivity often keeps our minds racing ahead of us, planning, analysing, solving. Another of cacao’s quiet gifts is how it balances the head and the heart - by drawing this mental energy back down into the heart.

Thoughts become clearer.
The mind becomes less reactive.
Perspective widens.

Instead of thinking about life, I begin to feel part of it.

This shift can bring a beautiful coherence where my logic and intuition begin to work together rather than compete. Decisions feel less forced and more aligned.

Here, cacao helps me restore balance between my analytical mind and my intuitive heart. Making it a profound balancing remedy for anytime I feel my mind is running the show, or I’m living in my head.

Cacao is a remedy for both an overactive and underactive mind

But cacao isn't just all about the heart - the brain boost is phenomenal! The synergy of compounds in cacao activates therapeutic levels of brain chemicals for focus, clarity, motivation and drive. So when my brain is feeling offline or has gone walkabout, or I’m stuck in a mental cycle of self doubt or fear that is stopping me from moving forwards, cacao gives me the clarity, drive, motivation and power for breakthrough.

It’s also a natural anti-depressant, helping to stabilise mood through the release of anandamide (the "bliss molecule") and phenylethylamine (the "love chemical"). Any time my thinking is clouded by a fog of depressing thoughts, it helps my mind come back to its own natural balance and equilibrium. It pulls the more overactive energy of mind down into my heart and soul, realigning my thoughts with my true intentions.

So cacao can also support me in tapping into the more, yang type “masculine” aspects of myself, to bring me back into inner alignment.

If you're interested, I shared more on working consciously with both the Masculine and Feminine qualities of cacao in an article 'Is Cacao Feminine or Masculine'.

Simple Cacao Ritual to Restore Balance

When aspects of your life feel out of balance, here’s an easy practice you can do at home. Remember, restoring equilibrium with cacao doesn’t require an elaborate ceremony. It can begin with simple intention and a moment of presence.

When next preparing your cacao try this:

  • Pause before drinking and offer gratitude, for the land, the farmers and the lineage of wisdom that carries this plant to you.
  • As you stir your cacao, set a gentle intention, not to fix or change anything, but simply to listen. Imagine stirring this intention into your cacao.

Then, as you drink slowly:

  1. Mindfully notice the warmth, your breath and the sensations in your body.
  2. You may want to reflect on how balanced you feel in life. If you feel out of balance anywhere in life, consider how might you bring things back into alignment?
  3. Allow space for some quiet moments of journaling, reflection or meditation. Be fully present to whatever’s arising.

Through this practice, cacao becomes a mirror. It highlights where there is tension and where there is openness, helping the body, mind and heart find their way back to balance.

A Living Reminder

The Mayan myth does not suggest cacao saves the world. It suggests that cacao reminds people how to restore balance themselves. Again, it’s up to us to step through the gateway to find our place of balance.

The rainforest offering its fruit is symbolic of nature’s ongoing invitation to us. Return to relationship, return to the heart, return to balance.

Cacao reminds us that true balance is not about perfection. It is about cultivating steadiness, softening enough to listen, and grounding enough to act with clarity.

One cup at a time, cacao offers a simple practice:

Relax the heart.
Open the mind.
Steady the body.
Return to balance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is ceremonial cacao and how is it different from regular chocolate?

Ceremonial cacao is pure, minimally processed cacao paste made from whole cacao beans — containing all of the bean's natural fats, minerals, and active compounds. Unlike regular chocolate, it contains no added sugar, milk, or fillers. It is prepared and consumed intentionally, often as part of a ritual or meditative practice, and retains therapeutic levels of compounds like theobromine, magnesium, anandamide, and phenylethylamine that are largely absent from commercial chocolate.

How does cacao help restore balance in the body?

Cacao supports physical balance through theobromine, a gentle stimulant that supports circulation and steady energy without the peaks and crashes associated with caffeine. Its exceptionally high magnesium content nourishes the nervous system, helps muscles relax, and eases the stress response. Together, these compounds encourage a state of calm alertness — energy and relaxation coexisting — which many people describe as a sense of grounded, steady focus.

Why is cacao called a heart opener?

Cacao is called a heart opener because it stimulates the release of anandamide (known as the 'bliss molecule') and phenylethylamine (the 'love chemical'), alongside its high magnesium content, which relaxes the body and creates a sense of inner softness and safety. This physiological shift can make it easier for emotions to rise gently to the surface and be felt and released, rather than staying held in the body. Many people report a greater sense of compassion, openness, and emotional clarity after drinking ceremonial cacao.

Can cacao help with focus, motivation, and mental clarity?

Yes. The synergy of compounds in ceremonial cacao — including theobromine, magnesium, anandamide, and phenylethylamine — activates therapeutic levels of brain chemicals associated with focus, clarity, motivation, and drive. Cacao also acts as a natural mood stabiliser, helping to lift mental fog and reduce the kind of anxious, overthinking mental cycles that can block forward movement. Many people use cacao as a mindful alternative to coffee for a focused, clear-headed morning.

How do I do a simple cacao ritual at home to restore balance?

A simple cacao ritual does not require an elaborate ceremony. Begin by preparing your ceremonial cacao slowly and intentionally. Before drinking, pause and offer gratitude for the plant and its origins. As you stir, set a gentle intention — not to fix anything, but simply to listen. Drink slowly and mindfully, noticing the warmth, your breath, and the sensations in your body. Reflect quietly on where you feel out of balance and how you might restore alignment. Follow with a few minutes of journaling, meditation, or stillness. This simple practice transforms cacao from a drink into a grounding ritual.

Is ceremonial cacao safe to drink every day?

For most healthy adults, ceremonial cacao is safe to enjoy daily in moderate amounts. A typical ceremonial dose is 35–45g of pure cacao paste. Because cacao contains theobromine and small amounts of caffeine, those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or sensitive to stimulants should consult a healthcare professional before use. Cacao may also interact with certain antidepressants (particularly MAOIs) due to its phenylethylamine content. As with any plant medicine, listening to your body and starting with a smaller dose is always recommended.

What did the Mayans use cacao for?

In Mayan tradition, cacao was considered a sacred plant medicine used in ceremony to restore harmony and balance — both within individuals and within communities. It was understood not simply as food, but as a bridge between the spiritual and physical worlds. Cacao ceremonies were used to mark important moments, facilitate healing, open the heart and bring people into alignment with themselves and each other. This lineage of wisdom continues to inform how many practitioners work with ceremonial cacao today.
