Earth Breathing is a simple yet powerful practice to align you with the pulse and heartbeat of the Earth. It’s incredibly nourishing and honouring – both to you and Gaia.

Designed to slow you w a y  d-o-w-n , it nourishes and downregulates your nervous system – something we could all benefit from in our busy, bustling lives!

It’s a beautiful way to honour the Great Mother, offering your belly to hers and letting her hold you in her loving embrace.

The Earth Breathing Practice

Earth Breathing is most effective when lying directly on the Earth, belly to belly. If this isn’t possible, you can rest anywhere and use your imagination to connect with the ground.

  1. Lower the front of your body to rest on Mother Earth. You may turn your head to the side, swapping halfway through the practice. Alternatively, rest your forearms above your head, one atop the other, and place your forehead on your wrist. This keeps your neck aligned with your spine and is a great option for any neck concerns.

  2. Ensure you are completely comfortable before settling into stillness and connecting with your breath. Start by practising the ‘falling out’ breath; inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Each exhale might come with a sigh or sound as you deeply immerse into the practice, letting everything else fall away with each breath.

  3. As you slow down and surrender to the Earth beneath you, notice a profound sense of relaxation permeate your entire being. There's nothing to do here except let go.

  4. Now, begin to connect your breath with that of Mother Earth. As you exhale, imagine the Earth breathing in all that you are letting go of. Then, as you inhale, envision the Earth breathing out, gifting you everything you need. It may feel a little less fluid at the start, but eventually, you want to move towards a cyclical, circular breath with no end or beginning. Continue with this practice, feeling the reciprocity created between you and the Great Mother.

  5. Stay here for at least 10 minutes to fully experience the benefits, and even longer if you wish. When finished, quietly offer your gratitude to Gaia for her generosity, support, and nurturing.

  6. Gently return your body to an upright position and move back into your day or evening slowly and mindfully.

In honour of this time, I'd like to share about the resurrection rites, not only in reference to the story of Jesus, but as a reference point repeated through culture and myth and as a potential seed for our own powerful Resurrection and rebirth.

In many traditions, the Spirit of Cacao is often referred to as a Goddess. However, in Spanish, cacao is referred to as "el cacao", making it masculine. So which is it?
