Friends of Cacao ~ Saffron

Our community has been asking us about pairing cacao with other amazing plant allies, so we did some experiments with Saffron, and made some astonishing discoveries we’re excited to share with you!

Combining Cacao and Saffron creates a powerful synergy that’s really all about boosting your mood, brainpower, and elevating your spiritual vibes. Perfect for these intense times!! But before we get into the how's and whys of this blessed union, let’s tune in to the enchanting world of Saffron…

Nicknamed “Red Gold”, Saffron is the world’s most expensive cultivated herb. It’s been used in folk medicine and the Ayurvedic health system for a myriad of issues including as a sedative, expectorant (helps clear mucus), anti-asthma, emmenagogue (stimulates blood flow in the womb) and adaptogenic agent. It was also used in various opioid preparations for pain relief.

Saffron has been revered and used for over 3500 years, and not just for its culinary and medicinal properties, but also for its mythical and magical significance throughout history too. Let’s explore in more depth...

The Mythical Aspects

Greek Mythology: In ancient Greece, Saffron was linked to the gods and was often associated with the sun. The myth of Crocus and Smilax tells of the mortal Crocus, who was transformed into a saffron flower by the gods after a tragic love affair with the nymph Smilax. This transformation symbolizes the plant’s connection to love and beauty.

Indian Lore: In Hindu mythology, Saffron is sacred and often associated with the goddess Lakshmi, symbolizing wealth, purity, and prosperity. It’s also used in religious rituals to invoke divine blessings.

Persian Legends: Saffron has deep roots in Persian culture, where it was believed to be a gift from the gods. Persian folklore mentions its use as a potent love charm, with young lovers using it to win the affections of their beloved.

And the Magical Uses

Love and Attraction: Saffron has long been considered a potent ingredient in love spells and potions. It was often added to love charms and aphrodisiacs to enhance attraction and deepen romantic connections.

Protection: In various cultures, Saffron was used as a protective charm against evil spirits and negative energy. It was sometimes burned as incense or sprinkled around homes to create a protective aura.

Spiritual Enlightenment: Saffron has been used in rituals and ceremonies aimed at spiritual awakening and enlightenment. Its vibrant colour and uplifting scent were believed to help elevate consciousness and connect with higher realms.

Healing and Vitality: Beyond its physical healing properties, Saffron was often used in magical practices to boost vitality and energy. It was thought to restore balance and harmony within the body and spirit, making it a popular ingredient in ancient healing rituals.

References to Saffron in Historical Texts

Saffron is mentioned as one of the flowers that bloom on Mount Olympus, the home of the gods, reflecting its divine association in the "The Iliad" by Homer.

The Bible: Saffron appears in the Song of Solomon, symbolizing luxury, love, and beauty: "Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates with pleasant fruits, fragrant henna with spikenard, spikenard and saffron, calamus and cinnamon, with every kind of incense tree" (Song of Solomon 4:13-14).

The Kama Sutra: Saffron is referenced in this ancient Indian text, particularly in recipes for love potions and enhancing physical intimacy. OooOooh!!

Saffron in Modern Magical Practices

Even today, Saffron is cherished in modern witchcraft and spiritual practices. It’s often used in rituals to promote clarity, love, and prosperity. People might include saffron in sachets or teas to invoke its protective and uplifting energies.

So, it seems Saffron's mystical allure has endured through the ages, making it a treasured ingredient in both historical and modern magical practices. Whether you’re brewing a love potion or just enjoying its golden hue in a dish, saffron holds a legacy of magic and mystery with every thread.

But what about Saffron’s amazing healing potential?

Here’s a breakdown of why we love it:

Saffron Vibes

  1. Mood Elevator: Saffron is like sunshine in spice form! It has potent antidepressant properties, thanks to compounds like crocin and safranal, which help balance neurotransmitters like serotonin. So, it’s a natural mood-lifter, balancing out your brain chemicals and making you feel like you’re walking on sunshine!
  2. Antioxidant Powerhouse: Packed with antioxidants, which protect the body from oxidative stress and inflammation, Saffron is all about protecting your body from toxins and keeping things running smoothly.
  3. Brain Boost: Saffron offers cognitive support, helping with memory, learning, and keeping your mind sharp.
  4. Gut Whisperer: Saffron can soothe digestive issues and enhance digestion by promoting the secretion of digestive enzymes. If you’ve got tummy troubles, Saffron's your friend, helping to get your digestive juices flowing

The Magic of Cacao

And let’s not forget about the magic of cacao – especially a high vibe cacao like Sacred Earth Medicine! For those of you who’ve only recently joined our community (or anyone who needs a little reminder) some of the prime benefits of cacao include:

  1. Mood Booster: Cacao is basically a cozy hug in a cup. It’s rich in compounds like theobromine, anandamide, and phenylethylamine (try saying that three times fast!) - which all help lift your spirits and make you feel awesome.
  2. Heart Helper: It’s not just your taste buds that love cacao; your heart’s a fan too! The flavonoids in cacao support cardiovascular health, keeping your ticker happy by improving blood flow and reducing inflammation.
  3. Brain Power: Need to focus? Cacao’s got your back! Its antioxidants help protect the brain and enhance cognitive function, improving focus and memory. The brain boost will help you think clearer and remember where you left your keys (phew!).
  4. Spiritual Connection: Used in ceremonies since ancient times, cacao helps us to unlock and open our hearts, deepen in meditation, and enhance our spiritual awareness. When you drink it, something just feels magical, right?

Well, what happens when you pair the two together…?

Synergy of Cacao and Saffron

  1. Amplified Mood Boost: Both Cacao and Saffron have mood-enhancing properties. Together, they can create a powerful effect, helping to alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression while promoting a sense of joy and well-being. It’s a bit like a happiness cocktail, perfect for shaking off stress and finding your groove.
  2. Enhanced Cognitive Function: The combination of Cacao’s theobromine and Saffron's crocin provides a more sustained and focused mental clarity, making it ideal for meditation, creative work, or learning.
  3. Spiritual and Emotional Vibes: Cacao is amazing for opening the heart and deepening emotional and spiritual connection. Saffron can enhance this by uplifting the spirit and promoting a profound sense of connection and calm. Together, it’s like a soulful upgrade.
  4. Antioxidant Armour: Both are loaded with antioxidants, working together to protect the body and brain from oxidative stress, potentially slowing the aging process and reducing the risk of chronic diseases (a bit like your body’s personal defence team, helping you stay healthy and youthful). 5.
  5. Digestive Harmony: The combination of Cacao’s mild stimulant effect with Saffron’s soothing properties may even help balance your digestion.

How to Enjoy Cacao and Saffron Together

You can combine Cacao and Saffron in various ways :

  1. Herbal Glycerite: I enjoyed adding Saffron as an herbal glycerite to my morning Cacao. 1-2 dropperfuls. Not only does it have a sweet taste but it’s a good way to get more potency out of it.
  2. Saffron Infused Cacao: Add 3-6 threads of Saffron to approx. 1 cup of boiled water and let it steep for 8 minutes. Remove threads and gently reheat. Pour this onto 1-2 tablespoons of Ceremonial Cacao in your mug, mix well. Add your preferred sweetener.
  3. Cacao Elixirs: Use either option above as a guide (or create your own version) to combine Saffron with your SEM Ceremonial Cacao drink to add a little magic and enhance its effects.
  4. Meditation Fuel: Sip this blend before meditation and watch your practice go deeper.
  5. Creative Juice: If you’re needing some inspiration, consume the blend before engaging in creative work to boost focus, clarity, and inspiration. This combo will help you get in the zone, whether you’re writing, painting, or just daydreaming.

Saffron has been revered and used for over 3500 years, and not just for its culinary and medicinal properties, but also for its mythical and magical significance throughout history too.

Celebrated by ancient cultures across the globe, the Summer Solstice, or Litha, heralds the longest day of the year and celebrates the potent energy of the Sun.

Consciously creating a life you love is possible! The powerful practice of intention setting (with cacao) is an amazing ally for making this a reality!

There’s been a lot of concerned murmuring in the wider chocolate industry of late, specifically around the high levels of heavy metals found within cacao (namely lead and cadmium). Our latest lab test results inside!
